Description
An important large-scale folding map by Charles Scrivener of the present-day city of Canberra, featuring contour lines and elevation data, created as part of the preliminary studies for the future federal capital.
The map bears the printed signature of Charles Robert Scrivener, dated May 22, 1909.

Scrivener is best known for his role in selecting the site for the federal capital.
Influenced by the concept of “excess overflow” from the Snowy River, Alexander Oliver recommended Bombala, with maritime access to Eden, as the best potential location for Australia’s capital.
For two months during the winter of 1904, Scrivener and an assistant worked on horseback in snow-covered regions to prepare contour maps, which Scrivener himself drew in a tent on rough paper with such precision that the Department of Lands quickly published 4,000 copies. His reports were decisive in the selection of Dalgety as the initial site. Scrivener then mapped out the proposed territorial boundaries, adding on his own initiative 1,550 square miles (4,015 km²) to include the Snowy River watershed and Mount Kosciusko... After the Commonwealth accepted, in December 1908, a capital site in the Yass-Canberra district, Andrew Fisher chose him, over the Chief Surveyor of New South Wales, to determine the best location for the city and the watershed.
Despite negotiations regarding an alternative territory, Scrivener’s recommendation for a city located in the Canberra Valley, with rail access to Jervis Bay, was adopted.
His survey served as the basis for the internal competition.
In 1910, Scrivener was appointed the first Director of Lands and Surveys for the Commonwealth. He established the Topographic and Cadastral Survey Division of the Department of Home Affairs, focusing on topographic, cadastral, triangulation, and railway surveys related to urban planning and land acquisition.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
