Description
A fine, large pictorial plan of the City of Philadelphia, based on the drawing by Jacob Riegel in 1937, which itself was based on an earlier work dating back to 1794.
The first (and probably only) edition of this plan. The plan beautifully illustrates the city's historic volunteer Fire Departments. It shows the modern Downtown area of the city, between the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. Either side of the Downtown area are (left) a reference table listing some 36 (A-Ll) different Engine & Fire Houses, along with important and significant buildings (1-33). The numbers correspond to numbers on the plan. To the right are: the city coat-of-arms, the orginal plan dedication to Thomas Miffin (Govenor and Commander-in-Chief of the State of Pennsylvania), a state building and a scale of feet.
Surrounding the plan are numerous illustrations depicting the history of the 'Union Fire Company'. There are scenes of volunteer firefighters, their early fire fighting equipment and the fighting of fires.
There are also vignettes of the different fire company's fire hats, and emblems / logos. Along the base of the plan are sketches of "Model [Fire] Engines in the Collection of the Insurance Company of North America", together with portraits of an early firefighter and his modern counterpart.
Along the top of the plan are a series of figures representing the uniforms of various firemen and their companies. A nice unusual item in very good condition.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
