Description
Dated August 4, 1721, and signed by Spoor, and by four witnesses, three who would become future governors of the Cape (then senior members of the VOC Council of Policy) - Hendrik Swellengrebel, Jan de la Fontaine, and Adriaan Kervel. (Hendrik Swellengrebel was the first and only Dutch East India Company governor of the Cape Colony (1739 to 1751) who was born in the Cape.)
It seems that the debt was paid, because on the front cover in the left hand side margin, in a different hand on May 11, 1724, the document is cancelled by the fiscal and has an addendum (codicil), signed by none other than Ryk Tulbagh, who became Governor in 1751. The document has a very clear 24 stuiver colorless VOC 1714 revenue stamp, cancelled by Swellengrebel in a strong signature on the top, also making a beautiful heading for the document. The revenue stamp is embossed in circular format with the Company's VOC seal in the centre, above which there is a "C" to indicate their use at the Cape. (At the top of the seals a date can usually be found,of which the earliest is 1711, but this version is 1714.)
And finally, on page 2, there is an excellent condition "CDG Hoop" red wax seal featuring a Dutch VOC ship in full sail. (The inscription at the bottom of the seal stands for "Cabo De Goede Hoop" - the Dutch for Cape of Good Hope.)
The main document has a beautiful Amsterdam watermark, and page two has IWM in capital letters as countermark. This shows that the paper used in the Cape was still imported from Amsterdam. Overall a fantastic example.
