Description
A wonderfully detailed and comprehensive map of the larger environs of London, by Thomas Kithchin and published by R & J Dodsley of Pall Mall in London. Unsurprisingly, the map is centered on the metropolis of central London, then branches out to all points of the compass, some twenty miles to such places as Beaconsfield and Chesham in the west, to Hertford and Harlow in the north, to Gravesend and Billericay in the east to Sevenoaks and Reigate in the south.
Interestingly there is a line that surrounds the capital that marks the extent of the 'Penny Post'. colored county boundaries standout. There is a wealthy of interesting information to be gleaned from this lovely map: commons, parish churches, tiny hamlets, small villages, larger towns, Gentlemen's stately homes (or simply their country 'retreats' away from the capital), farms, parks, forests, woods, copses, major and minor roads. There is even a handy mileage scale in the lower right corner, together with a symbol explanation.
This map takes you back over 250 years, before London grew to its present size and swallowed so many of these small hamets and villages. For instance, the areas to the west of London, marked 'Baber Bridge' , 'Powder Mills' and 'East Bedfont' that had to make way for London's busy international Heathrow airport. The more you study this fascinating map, the more you will appreciate and learn. Condition and Coloring

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
