Paulus Swaen began selling old maps and prints in 1978. We started with our fully online auctions in 1998. We were the only auction house that specialized in this format selling old maps and prints.
With the arrival of the metaverse and web3, we think we are at a crossroads with new opportunities to sell maps and prints differently, creating new ways to contact our collectors and potentially create new map lovers.

Buy or Bid Sales
Since June 2022 we organize "Buy or Bid" sales where you may purchase an item at the Buy price at any time and the sale for this item has closed.  If you do not wish to pay the buy price you may also bid/offer lower on any item.

Ukraine metaverse map expo

The mapping of Ukrainian lands in the 17th century was essentially influenced by the creation of a four-sheet map of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by Nikolai-Krzysztof Radzivill in 1613.
Please pop in at our metaverse expo of antique and rare maps of Ukraine. The oldest map is from 1535 and the latest is from 1941. Meanwhile, have a look at our fixed sale catalog of maps of Ukraine of which 10% of the invoice amount will be donated to Ukraine @UNICEF to help children in Ukraine.

About Amsterdam office

In 1692 a report states "In Europe are no more than 10 to 12 cities where books are printed in considerable amounts. One of them was Amsterdam". No wonder that Paulus Swaen Europe bv has settled in Amsterdam.
It is here, within two kilometers of the place where the printshops of Blaeu and Hondius were located, that our office is located.

Title pages
Title pages

Since the 16th century many atlases of maps and, more widely, works of geography, cosmography, exploration and travel have been preceded by highly decorative title pages and/or frontispieces presenting their contents in symbolic form.
Their aim is to attract the potential reader, first opening the book, by a visual expression of the contents of the work that is to follow.

The Dutch overseas
The Dutch overseas !

The Netherlands is a small country so it was depending on overseas trade. The Flying Dutchman was a sea captain who once found himself struggling to round the Cape of Good Hope during a ferocious storm.
Dutch traders settled from Deshima (Japan) to New Amsterdam (nowadays New York).
In this section, we follow the V.O.C .and W.I.C. and other Dutch overseas histories.
We not only offer interesting short articles but also offer authentic artifacts for sale.
