How does paper condition affect the value of old maps and prints?
Condition matters. For rare early maps, collectors tolerate minor flaws, but serious defects or obvious repairs can “drastically lower” value, even when a map is historically important.
* Dealers consistently list condition, alongside rarity, age, region, and aesthetics, as one of the core factors determining price.
Types of paper issues and their impact
* Flaws like light toning, small spots, and unobtrusive stains are usually acceptable and may only modestly affect value, especially for rarities.
* Structural problems such as large tears, losses, brittle or spongy paper, trimmed margins, heavy foxing, or mold can significantly reduce the map's value because they threaten its longevity and appearance.
