Description
A similar variant is well known, (see Norwich Map 206), and was published in Commelin's famous collections of travels titled Begin ende Voortgangh van de Vereenighde Nederlandsche Geoctroyeerde Oost-Indische Compagnie. The collection consists of twenty-one narratives of Dutch voyages to the East Indies from 1594 to 1631, constituting a history of the ?beginning and progress of the Dutch East India Company.?
The original map included a large compass rose and rhumblines, a more elaborate cartouche, sailing ship, sea gulls and two drawings of seaweed; objects all removed from this version. This map includes the coastal names introduced by the earliest Portuguese explorers and the interior is filled with large cities. It includes a large inset of De Baij Van A. de S. Bras (present-day Mossel Bay) and an inset coastal view of the Cape of Good Hope.
A comparison of this map with Norwich shows that this is not another state of the Commelin map, but a re-engraving based on the original, although this map is slightly smaller in size.
Unfortunately neither the cartographer nor the origin of the map is known. In the beginning of the 18th century Commelin's work was translated and republished and was quite popular. The Dutch edition of Commelin was translated and edited into French by Rene Auguste Constantin de Renneville and published in 1702 in Amsterdam, titled Recueil des voyages..... A 10 volume edition was also published in Rouen in 1725. An English version was published in 1703 in London by W. Freeman & J. Walthoe. The map may be from one of these editions.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
