A scarce little map of the Mississippi River Valley and western Great Lakes from the book “Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid…” which accounts the history of John Law's failed financial attempt to open up Louisiana and solve France's financial problems at the same time.
The map draws heavily from Hennepin's map, showing Lac de Illinois, rather than Lake Michigan. The extent of the French explorations, along with Indian Tribes are shown throughout. Two added Dutch features are the title cartouche with crown at the top right and the coat-of-arms of the Mississippi Company on the left. This map was most likely engraved by Leonard Schenk.
An essential map for Mississippi and Great Lakes Collectors !

John Law (1671–1729) was a Scottish economist who was appointed Controller General of Finances of France under the Duke of Orleans, regent for the youthful king, Louis XV. He was responsible for the Mississippi Company ”Bubble” and a chaotic economic collapse in France, which has been compared to the early-17th century tulip mania in Holland and the South Sea Company bubble of England.
You may read more about "Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid", or "The Great Mirror of Folly" or view several of the seventy-four plates from this book. ¤
