Two pages from the first and only but very important Dutch edition of this curious and comprehensive zoological work, richly illustrated with excellent copper engravings, many of them superior to others produced in the 17th century. The plates include unusual representations of animals like dancing bears, and of mythical beasts like unicorns, harpies, phoenixes, dragons, etc. The work was the only source of knowledge of Western zoology in Japan from 1663, when the book was presented to Shogun Yoshimune, till 1750 when an extensive 12-volume compilation on European natural history was composed by the Shogunal physicians from Dutch sources. And even that compilation, according to Boxer, still heavily leaned on Jonston's magnum opus. page fine engraved plates in very attractive contemporary hand colouring. Lacking engraved frontispiece of birds and 2 leaves introduction. Several pages have minor water stains. The over-all impression of the books is that of a fine copies because of the good and dark impression in attractive original colouring of the plates. Many initials are also coloured by hand. Copies with original hand-colouring are very rare.
