Rare Lafreri School town-plan of Milan, engraved by Paolo Forlani, of the Lafreri school of mapmakers, first published in "Il Primo Libro Delle Citta, Et Fortezze Principali Del Mondo", this is the second issue in Giulio Ballino's "De' Disegni Delle Piu Illustri Citta …" published by Zaltieri.
This example has Italian text and the page number 19 on the verso.

The so-called "Lafreri" school of mapmakers constitutes a loose group of engravers and printers working in Venice and Rome in the middle of the sixteenth century who often bound together collections of maps and prints to form atlases.
Lafreri had been one of the leading publishers whose catalogue of stock and whose renown for binding together loose sheets, gave rise to the "Lafreri" attribution.

A schematic plan of 1567, with the Castle in the bottom. The cartouche in the upper left reads: "Il vero disegno della pianta di Milano sì come veramente oggi dì si ritrova. In Venezia, all’insegna della colonna, l’anno 1567"
In addition to the new ramparts, cyclopean work begun around 1550 under the governorship of Ferrante Gonzaga, the Castle is fitted with both Tenaglia, both of Galera, the first defensive devices prostheses towards the village of Ortolani, the second to the church of S . Maria delle Grazie. But it is not depicted, although completed in the year of publication.
The plate was acquired by Ballino, designed, and printed in facsimile by Beltrami (see Bibliography) which took over the inconsistency of the scale is shown at the bottom right.
