Title page drawn on stone by George Moore, from sketches taken in 1832 and 1833 by Owen Jones and the late Jules Goury.
The 19th-century Egyptian revival in Britain developed quickly, and with it an increased number of artists descended upon Egypt to study its ancient remains. Architect Owen Jones was among them, and in 1832 he and fellow architect Jules Goury traveled down the Nile in search of Egyptian polychromatic ornament. Jonesí illustrations of the ruins of ancient Egypt, along with those of Greece, Rome, and Persia, strongly influenced Victorian design.
