Abraham Ortelius (1527 - 1598) was a Flemish cartographer and geographer whom is celebrated as the creator of the first modern atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the World). After studying Greek, Latin, and mathematics, Ortelius went into business with his sister as a book dealer and "printer of maps." Ortelius' work, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, was the first uniformly sized, systematic collection of maps; this work can therefore be called the first atlas (although the term was not used until 20 years later by Mercator). Elegantly engraved by Frans Hogenberg, the work contained 70 maps on 53 leaves. In the following years, five supplements were added. Originally issued in 1570, four editions of the Theatrum were published the first year; it was to be reissued in 42 editions overall, until 1612, with 5 supplements and text in Latin, Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Italian and English.

Condition : Five inch repaired tear at center crease starting at the bottom paper edge; one inch repaired tear along top paper edge to the right of the center crease.
The number 37 has been hand-written in pencil in the top right corner. Very minor discoloration in paper margin.
