Although not renowned for the originality of his work, Pieter van der Aa is highly thought of for the design and quality of his output.
This map of Africa is a good and dark impression with a very decorative title cartouche, with a nude woman sitting on a rectangle of masonry situated in a rural scene with foliage and trees in the background, with elephants at the back around the trees.
In the foreground is a partial view of an elephant and, adjacent to the masonry on the right, a lion looking to its right towards a coiled snake appearing to be moving towards it.

There appears to be a compromise in the mapping of the Nile basin, showing the river rising from Lake Tzana, in an area marked Demba, though the Ptolemaic lakes Zaire and Zaflan are retained, unconnected to the Nile. The map shows the Cape settlements in the south and the Portuguese ones on the lower eastern coastline and mainland.
The center of the map is blank with a Latin legend stating: 'I would rather show this part of Africa as unknown and uninhabited than rely on my imagination.
