Description
No other example of this state of the map could be traced by us ! Could be unique, maybe in time especially produced on request of a client.

Good example of this very rare state of the Homanns' second map of America. Colored to depict the Religions practiced on the American Continent.

Two past-on stickers explaining the coloring have been added in the lower margin. The map has been colored to religious majority :
- Brown coloring for native Religions for large areas in northern and western North America, Amazonia, and Southern Argentine/Chile.
- Yellow coloring for Roman Catholics, mostly in southern North America , Central America, and the colonized parts of South America.
- Green coloring for Calvinists in the English colonies on North America's east coast, Jamaica, Suriname ,and 'Cap de la Vola' and 'Comana' in northern Venezuela.
Last not least the only places with Lutheranian population, red coloring, seems to have been Trinidad and the opposing Venezuelan coast [Courland colonies at this time].

Also the name of the engraver Sebastian Dorn is added in the lower right corner.

Otherwise the map reflects the substantial new information obtained since the issuance of the first map of America by the patriarch of the Homann Family, Johann Baptiste Homann.
The decorative cartouche includes some very lively visual imagery, including volcano's and a nice allegorical scene representing the people, flora and fauna of America.

The interior of North America benefits from the knowledge obtained by the Jesuits in the Interior parts of North America, especially along the Mississippi River and English and Dutch information along the coast. The French are still the dominant force in the North, the Spanish in the South, immediately prior to the French and Indian War. The Great Lakes are only just now being accurately charted by D'Anville and later Mitchell. The west coast conforms to the French updates provided by De L'Isle and progeny. South America is substantially corrected from earlier models.

The NW Coast of America and NW Passage are still unknown, but wishfully shown. Quivira is shown considerably east of its normal location. Quivira was the the legendary land of gold and silver. Francisco de Coronado began his search for Quivira in 1541, but found only Indian Villages. He did however report to the Spanish King that the land was suitable for growing all of the products of Spain. Quivira migrated progressively further North and East, until it disappeared in the late 18th Century. The map seems to be influenced primarily by the highly influential map of America by De L'Isle first issued in 1700, although the Haas retains some of the great mythical cartographic features in the interior regions.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
