Sought-after complete suite of 6 engravings by S[tefano] Della Bella [1610-1664]. in a second state (of 2).
Della Bella was born in Florence in 1610, and studied the art of etching under Remigio Cantagallina, who had also been the master of Callot. While at first the young artist undertook to emulate Callot, he soon developed a style of his own.

"No artist has handled the point with more facility and finesse than Della Bella. His execution is admirable, and his touch spirited and picturesque. He designed his subjects with infinite taste, and his plates produce a clear and brilliant effect..." (Bryan's Dictionary Of Painters And Engravers).

The etchings demonstrate his fascination for seaports and marine views, of which he produced several sets, large and small. (see Phyllis Dearborn Massar, Presenting Stefano della Bella Seventeenth-century Printmaker, pp. 114-117) De Vesme 787-793: 794-801.

Provenance : Collector mark "F Q" for Friedrich Quiring. Friedrich Quiring born in Gelsenkirchen in Westphalia in 1889, who was an army officer. Since 1913, Quiring has been collecting prints and drawings from the XVth to the XVIIIth century from German masters like Altdorfer and Dürer but also prints by Rembrandt and Van Ostade. The marks appear only on his best pieces.

Reference: De Vesme 844-849.
