Printed broadsheet promoting the "Boule de Mars" (March Ball) produced and sold by Renault in Nancy and Paris. Ornated with the royal coat of arms of France. Prices are mentioned at bottom : "Le prix est de six Livres, Trois Livres, Quarante-huit Sols, vingt quatre Sols, & Douze Sols."

The "Boules de Mars" or "Boules d'acier vulnéraires" (steel balls) were a medicine usually prepared with potassium tartrate (mentioned as tartar in the recipes) and iron tartrate.
The name comes from its iron content and its ball shape, which was usually black. The ball had a small loop (ribbon or cord) to allow it to be hung vertically.

There were various ways of ingesting it, but the most common was to dissolve it partially in water or brandy. This was known as "eau de boule".
They are often called "boules de Nancy", because they were mainly made in this city, due to the quality of the iron from Lorraine, and an important local tradition.
