A delightful French satirical cartoon, a 'John Bull' allegory. Set in the 'Orange Café' in Plymouth it features John Bull seated on the left, Major Grosswener seated in the middle and Barbaro, a hero from the Ostend expedition, is standing to the right with his trousers down and vomiting.
Summary:The French have just taken Malta (1798), but they surmise that Bonaparte will not stay there long. The French still occupy Portugal. Barbaro has violent indigestion, vomits, and blames the Maltese oranges. The English Major (a peacemaker in Ireland) says that the Portuguese oranges are better.
A cockerill holds a clyster in its claw and is about to give Barbaro an enema.

The War of the Oranges was a brief conflict in 1801 in which Spanish forces, instigated by the government of France, and ultimately supported by the French military, invaded Portugal. It was a precursor to the Peninsular Wars, resulting in the Treaty of Badajoz, the loss of Portuguese territory, in particular Olivenza, as well as ultimately setting the stage for the complete invasion of the Iberian Peninsula by French forces.
