Latin pocket-size atlas of Ortelius' "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", published for those who could not afford the expensive large atlases of the time. "A new series of pocket-size atlases was begun by Filips Galle in 1588. It seems that he was not satisfied with the quality of the maps in the Spieghel der Wereld. He had new maps engraved in a much better style, and gradually replaced the old maps with new ones. At the same time, he changed the title and added the name of Abraham Ortelius, giving it a prominent position on the title page. In or before 1601, Filips Galle sold his rights and plates to Jan Baptist Vrients."

Four different printings of this 1601-edition are known (A-D in Van der Krogt), containing 10-23 of the old 'Spieghel' maps. Our copy is printing D.
Illustrated with engraved coat of arms of Albert and Isabella, the governors of the Spanish Netherlands, on verso of title and 126 maps including a small world map on title, a double-hemisphere celestial map, a double-hemisphere world map, a world map in Mercator projection ("Typus Orbis Terrarum"), 4 maps of the continents, a view of the Escorial and 118 of countries and regions, incl. China, India, Japan, Iceland, etc.
