A finely engraved pair of two separate but matching sheets with images depicting a group of the Electors of the Holy Roman Empire.
The plates were originally engraved by master engraver Antonie Wierinx, and were first published in 1593 in Gerard de Jode’s atlas 'Speculum Orbis Terrae', Antwerp 1593. Later, the plates were acquired by Vrients and, from 1603, were included in Abraham Ortelius's 'Theatrum', in its first Latin 1603 edition under Folio numbers XVII and XVIII, later in his 'Parergon', the first historical atlas.
They depict the nobles who were entitled to choose Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. The plates show the highest-ranking officials at the top and the least powerful at the bottom. The emperor is centered at the top of the plate, seated on an elaborate throne, with seven officials surrounding him.
