This an example of Cassini's wonderful map made in order to celebrate the visit to Tahiti by the English Captain James Cook, during his scientific mission to observe the transit of the Venus across the sun in 1769, during which time he and his crew undertook the first scientific efforts to map and describe Tahiti.
A decorative map of the island of Tahiti, with a large and imposing cartouche depicting native islanders, published in Rome by Cassini, with an inset map of the Marquesas Islands in upper right quadrant.

From, Cassini's atlas, "Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale Delineato Sulle Ultime Osservation..." Giovanni Maria Cassini (1745-1824) was a Rome based Italian globe maker, geographer, engraver, and cartographer active in the later part of the 18th and early 19th century. He is not to be confused with the un-related well known French cartographic family of the same name, Cassini is considered the last of the great 18th century globe makers. Interestingly, unlike many map and atlas publishers of the period, Cassini did all of his own engraving work.
