Condition Rating

A beautifully engraved map of the Northeast, extending from the St. Laurence and New England to the Chesapeake and centered on Long Island, which is still shown as an island. Derived from the highly influential map by Visscher. The decoration of this finely engraved map has in the lower right corner not longer a view of New York but has in its place an entirely new cartouche.
The first state of the map, prepared by Meurs for the Dutch edition of Montanus De Nieuwe en onbekende Weereld.. and than printed for Oglilby's America.. in 1671. The second state was issued by Van der Aa and appeared c. 1729 A third state, issued in 1761, was prepared in Amsterdam by Covens and Mortier.

Measurements exclude the margins and are provided in both millimeters and inches, with height given first.
Color was done by hand. 'Original colors' means that the item was colored at, or about, the time of it's original publication. When the term 'Colored' appears, it means that the map was more recently colored, likely in this century or at the end of last century.
