Condition Rating

A finely engraved and beautiful map and one of the most recognised and influential maps of the Americas from the 16th century.
This example is from an early state of the first issue of Ortelius' iconic map of the western hemisphere. Distinguishing features include the large galleon in the Pacific heading westward (which reversed direction in 1579) and the prominent bulge in the South American coastline (which was smoothed in 1587).
This 2nd state has the corrected label for the Azores and retains the longitude grade number 230 at the top of the map, all as noted in Van Den Broecke.

Map embellishments include a decorative title cartouche, a sea monster and galleons under full sail streaming across the Pacific. The muted and understated colour in this example appears to be old colour but it is difficult to say with certainty.

An additional fee of 150$ packing and shipping fee applies when shipped within USA and 250$ to Asia and Europe.
Reference: Van Den Broecke 11, Burden 64; Schwartz & Ehrenberg 69.
