The Suez Canal is a sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez. Constructed by the Suez Canal Company between 1859 and 1869, it was officially opened on 17 November 1869.

In 2019 France and Egypt celebrate the historical and cultural links between the two countries and the 150th anniversary of the inauguration of the Suez Canal.
France is the country where the project, in its final form, was born. It was also the birthplace of Ferdinand de Lesseps and the headquarters of the Suez Canal Company before it was nationalized.
