This delightful map of the Roman Empire has six lovely bird's-eye vignette views of important cities (Rome, Genoa, Jerusalem, Venice, Constantinople & Alexandria), and ten side costume vignettes, that depict (among others) a Spaniard, an Egyptian, an Italian, and a Turk.
In the sea off Ireland is a sea-battle, that is waged with galleons, sea monsters lurk of the Irish coast and the Iberian Peninsula. Camels, ostriches, lions and a leopard are seen in the Sahara and Egypt in North Africa.
Engraved by Abraham Goos for Speed's Prospect of the World, with a two-page English text "The Description of Roman Empire" on verso. With some flourishing calligraphy, a decorative title cartouche, and a panel of explanatory text 'a short Declaration of the Beginning Increase & Height of the Roman Empire'.
