A good impression from an early edition of this famous and decorative cartes-a-figures from the first world atlas produced by an Englishman - John Speedís Prospect Of The Most Famous Parts Of The World.
The plates for the atlas passed through many hands in the 17th century, and the book finally reached its apotheosis in 1676 when it was published by Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell.

Full length figures in national costume appear in panels on either side, while the upper border features views, or plans, of London, Paris, Rome, Venice, Constantinople, Prague, Amsterdam and Lisbon.

The side border illustrations show figures of various nations in characteristic dress. Represented are an English woman, a Venetian, a German, an Hungarian, a Spaniard, a Flemish woman, a Belgian, a Bohemian woman, and a Greek.
The map was published in the first English atlas of the world.

English text on the reverse describes the continent.
Engraved by Abraham Goos. §
