The second 'modern' world map of Laurent Fries. This map is one of the earliest world maps available to a collector. The map is a reduced version of Martin Waldseemuller's "Admiral's Map" of the World from Claudii Ptolemaei Alexandrini Geographicae ...., first published in Strassburg in 1522.
It shows the world in a combination of classical misconceptions with a few of the more recent discoveries including a portion of the coastline of South America along the left border. Greenland is drawn as an elongated peninsula connected to a still primitively shaped Scandinavia.
Fries has added five kings, representing the kingdoms of Russia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Taprobana (Sri Lanka) and Mursuli. Also a drawing of an elephant or a mammoth was placed close to Greenland, which does not appear on the Waldseemuller map. Parts of the Americas are shown at the very west of the map.
