A wonderful map showing California as an island, and above, the north west of the continent left blank except for two paragraphs explaining the discoveries to date.
Interestingly, the Hudson Bay is called 'Buttons Bay', and the St Lawrence flows from Lake Iroquois, the only Great Lake to be shown. This important map was the first issued in a Dutch atlas to concentrate solely on North America and show California as an Island.

In Nova Anglia three lakes are depicted. There were other cartographers of that time who followed the older format map by Champlain, making this map an important precursor for the mapping of the region. This issue of the map has Dutch text on the reverse.

The map features a pair of lovely, decorative cartouches covering the upper and lower left corners, one featuring armed native Americans, the other putti. Exquisite native animals such as cattle, foxes, polar bears, horses, moose, rabbits, beavers and hogs are all engraved in miniature across the large swathes of empty map that represented the knowledge of the interior of America at that time.

Within the interior there are some explanatory notes to be read . An impressive quantity of ships and assorted sea monsters are seen off the coasts. Map detail is largely confined to rivers, larger settlements, bays, islands, mountains and lakes.
