A very attractive bird's-eye view of this most important European city, engraved at the height of the 'Golden Age' of Dutch cartography, when it sat at the hub of one of the great trading empires of Europe.
The river Amstel is still an open water flowing through the heart of the city. Only near the Dam it has been covered by Henry Keyser's Exchange and the fishmarket. The plan clearly shows the city centre embraced within its tight medieval town walls. The new expanded city limits and canal systems are shown with fortifications sketched out on the right, and drawn in via dotted lines to show the area to be enclosed on completion of the construction.
Numerous small buildings are shown divided by the Amstel river, and the canals, with the stock exchange and fish market at centre. Many windmills dotting the outer city walls. There are side panels left and right with an impressive key with 107 different numbered locations. In the foreground are a number of sailing ships and the city docks.
By way of embellishment you will find the city's coat of arms on at left, and the arms of the powerful VOC on the right. Johannes Blaeu produced this map for the Groot Toonneel der Steden or Town Atlas of the Low Countries in 1649 largely to commemorate Dutch independence from Spain at the conclusion of the Eighty Years' War.
A wonderful historic item.
