Rare map of Zeeland, first issued by Petrus Kaerius, than by Claes Jansz. Visscher. The copper plate was previously made by an anonymous engraver, and than came into the hands of Petrus Kaerius.
In the first state where the costume figures are was first a cartouche with text. Now, on the bottom right, we see a view of Middelburg with two locals dressed in the fashion of that time. To the left of this cartouche a scale surrounded by a strapwork border, above the publisher's imprint "C.J.Visscher excudebat anno 1631."

Top left a beautifully engraved 32-piece compass rose surrounded by ships and sea monster.
Petrus Kaerius' atlas "Germania Inferior" was the first Dutch atlas totally devoted to The Low Countries. In total this atlas experienced only three editions: two editions in Latin in 1617 and one in French in 1622. After the death of his wife in 1623, Kaerius came into financial difficulties and was obliged to sell his copper plates. The new owner was Claes Jansz. Visscher, who added his own name and with some small changes, this map of Zeeland was issued five times until 1634.
