Illustrated with a title page and 132 engraved plates of costumes (of 136) not following the numbering but grouped by countries.
The plates showing various nations from all over the world : Europe (Habits ordinaires des personnes qui composent l'Université de Cambridge, d'Oxford, La Pompe du Doge de Venise), America (13), Africa, Turks, Persians and Arab Tribes (10), Chinese peoples (35) of which 3 plates for Formosa (Taïwan), Japan (25) and one plate for Australia (Physonomie des habitans de la Nouvelle Hollande).

Very rare book of costumes published by Pietter van der Aa. The plates have been drawn by J. Goeree, J. Mulder and some other probably drawn and engraved by Hillebrand van der Aa, Pieter’s brother.
The collection has been published in folio size with 2 plates per page but can be also found in 8° size. A complete collection is hard to find.

The plates also appear in the “Galerie Agréable du Monde”, atlas of the world made up of 66 volumes, the largest book of prints ever published. Only 100 copies are said to have been printed. The great work covers Europe, Asia, Africa and America, and the entire world. Most of the plates were by other contemporary publishers, to which van der Aa added his signature.

Pieter van der Aa (1659 - 1733) was a Dutch publisher of maps and atlases active in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Van der Aa was born in Leyden in 1659. At nine he was apprenticed to a local bookseller and, by 21, had established his own publishing, printing, and auctioneering house. In 1692 Van der Aa was appointed to be one of the High Commissioners of the Booksellers Guild.
