Very detailed map of Western Ukrania. Scale 1: 500.000. Upper right corner "C.10." One sheet of 104 from "Carte de la Russie Européenne en LXXVII feuilles exécutée au Depôt general de la Guerre."

In 1812, preparing for war, Napoleon ordered the creation of several topographic maps of Russia. The most accurate of them was the map of European Russia (or large map of the Russian Empire), scale 1: 500,000. It consisted of 104 sheets measuring 50 x79 cm. 77 pages were devoted to the European part of Russia. The sheets were placed in rows, which ran parallel to the western border of the Russian Empire. The closest to the border row was designated A, following it in the direction of the east - B, etc.
Most probably based on the Stolistovaya map which was on the same scale, published by order of the Russian government in the years 1797-1805.

It is now sure how the Russian map became in the possession of the French General depot. Perhaps an example of the "Stolistovoy map" was secretly purchased by the French Ambassador J.A. Lauriston from one of the employees of the state archives in St. Petersburg who delivered the map to the Depot Général in Paris.
According to another version, the map was acquired in December 1810 by employees of Depôt Generale from one of the Parisian booksellers. After studying the map, Napoleon ordered his topographical cabinet engravers to reproduce it, replacing the Russian inscriptions in French. The transliteration of the work lasted until the end of 1811, and forty copies were printed in February 1812.
