Condition: Oblong 8vo. 204 pages. 20 full page maps, contemporary mottled calf, corners worn, spine renewed. Some browning and foxing throughout.

John Speed's miniature atlas, published in 1668, 3rd Edition. A rare edition that does not include the maps of British Isles.
List of maps include: World map, Asia, Africa, Europe, America (with California as an island), Greece, Roman Empire, Germany, Bohemia, France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Hungary, Denmark, Poland, Persia, Turkish Empire, China, Tartaria.
The World map and the map of America are both dated 1646.
Engraving by Pieter van den Keere, Jodocus Hondius' brother-in-law.

Interesting text comment on Virginia "on the East it has Mare del Nort, on the North Norumbega, Florida on the South and Westward the bound are not yet set... The North parts are most inhabited by our men and it is therefore called New England." Florida is "'a Pleasant Region... discovered by our English under Sebastian Cubbot 1497 but left for the Spaniard to possess, ...and after him the French, but neither in quiet. For they warred upon each other till they left neither of them men enough to hold it".

Color was done by hand. 'Original colors' means that the item was colored at, or about, the time of it's original publication. When the term 'Colored' appears, it means that the map was more recently colored, likely in this century or at the end of last century.

Our warranty means that there is no time limitation to our guarantee of authenticity and if there is ever discovered that something bought here is not authentic, your money will be returned.
