First state. Although a map of South America it does include much of what is now the southern United States. There are two elaborate, strap-work cartouches with the one at lower right surmounted by a finely rendered mapmaker’s compass. Above left and right respectively are the royal arms of Spain and France. From the third part of his "Grand Voyages" including the accounts of the voyages of Johann van Staden and Jean de Léry, during the 1540s and 1550s. The map is drawn from de Bry's own map of Florida after Jacques le Moyne, published in the previous year. There is no easily discernible source for the South American cartography. He includes still a form of protrusion to the south-west coastline of the continent, a feature which Ortelius had dropped in 1587. Attractively engraved, this rare map's outline was used again by de Bry for that of the West Indies in 1594. (Burden)

For more than 40 years we have been selling genuine old maps, atlases, prints, posters. Every item on this site is clearly dated and priced and was engraved on copper, unless otherwise stated.
Measurements exclude the margins and are provided in both millimeters and inches, with height given first.
Colour was done by hand. 'Original colours' means that the item was coloured at, or about, the time of it's original publication. When the term 'Coloured' appears, it means that the map was more recently coloured, likely in this century or at the end of last century.
A colour code is used and we use a condition rating system. In addition, we have created a unique HiBCOR grading system which we believe can assist all collectors in forming a collection. Please take the time to read this.
