Title : Tartariae sive Magni Chami Regni typus..
Map maker : ORTELIUS,A..
Date : Antwerp 1584.
Size : 13.8 x 18.5 inches. / 35.1 x 47.1 cm.
Colouring : In original colours.

Description :Much of the information shown on this map relates to the travels of Marco Polo between 1275 and 1291 with later information gained from the Portuguese Jesuit missionaries of the 1540s in Japan.
Kagoshima, where St.Francis Xavier landed in 1549, is indicated on one of the Japanese islands. Japan itself is placed well to the south of its true location so that it appears to stand sentinel across the entrance to the wide Stretto Di Anian which separates China and Tartary from North America.
One of the first maps to show a sign of the island of Taiwan, labelled hereIsola Fermosa.
The coasts of North America are drawn somewhat differently from those shown on Ortelius' general world map of 1570, recalling the outline depicted on his cordiform map of 1564.
This relationship is emphasised further inasmuch as the peninsula itself is labelled as California, rather than merely the tip, as is the case with his map of the World.
This beautiful map is elaborately decorated with an acanthus leaf border, finely wrought strapwork cartouches and flourished italic lettering.
Cortazzi, plate 16: OAG, plate 11E: Wagner, N-W Coast 81.
Condition : Good condition. Paper very slightly age-toned as usual. Very attractive colours. Latin text on verso.
