Description :The Latin text page is illustrated with a depictions of Kings, Noble men and women and scientists with on recto of page XXI a wood cut print of Abraham (130 x 225mm.) returning with his forces from the slaughter of the five kings. Melchizedek comes forth from his royal city to meet him, grateful for ridding the land of its invaders and oppressors.
The verso of XXI and recto of XXII showing the genealogies of the Third Age of the World begining with Abraham, third son of Terah, whom we see left at Folio XXI recto, among his descendants through his other two sons, Haran and Nahor, were portrayed. Here we find the beautiful Sarah (Saray), Abraham’s first wife, but she is still barren, and Isaac.
RECTO of page XXII : Abraham about to sacrifice his son Isaac (125 x 225mm.)
The picture falls into two divisions, separated by a narrow trail leading to the place of sacrifice. To the right the stern old patriarch dashes into the picture, a pot of fire in his hand, and the sacrificial sword under his arm. He is rushing his son, upon whose shoulders he has placed the wood of the burnt offering. The little lad is stooping forward under his burden. He certainly does not appear the twenty-five years which the Chronicler has placed to his credit. In vain he looks about him for the lamb that is necessary to the offering, but his father assures him that the good God will provide a sacrifice. And so they went together, and with them we cross the trail to the other side of the picture, where the diligent father has already built an altar and has laid the wood in order. And now to the sacrifice!
Nuremberg Chronicle, published the year that Columbus ret+urned to Europe after discovering America. In May of 1493 appeared in the Latin language one of the earliest voluminous books, fully illustrated with 1809 woodcuts printed from 645 woodblocks.
The woodblock cutters were Michael Wolgemut, the well-known teacher of Albrecht Dürer, and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. Wohlgemut was Albrecht Dürer's tutor between 1486-90 and recent scholarship has shown, Albrecht Dürer may also have collaborated, since some of the cuts bear a remarkably close resemblance to the Apocalypse illustrations.
The printing was carried out under the supervision of the great scholar-printer Anton Koberger, whose printing were famous throughout Europe
