Date : Amsterdam, 1635.
Size : 16.2 x 21.7 inches. / 41.2 x 55.2 cm.
Colouring : Coloured.

Description :An uncommon edition, without text on verso, of Willem Blaeu's famous map of Asia. This is a folio-size map of Asia and is one of the better known, more decorative maps of Asia of the 17th century.
Title and impressum in a small cartouche at top left: 'Asia noviter delineata Autore Guiljelmo Blaeu'.
This map shows major Asian Cities across the top and indigenous costumes along the sides. Korea is still shown as an island. Japan is portrayed in a predominantly east to west direction.
In China, the Great Wall is shown along with the in-land lakes. The classic Northeast Passage shown, with a highly speculative and incomplete NE Coast of Asia shown, opposite and equally conjectural piece of North America. Large portions of the Borneo Coastline and other parts of the Islands in Southeast Asia and Australasia are incomplete or highly inaccurate. The map is decorated with numerous sea monsters, sailing ships and an elephant above the source of the Ganges.
Top border with nine small maps of major cities, islands, etc in the region: Calcutta (‘Calecuth’), Goa, Damascus (‘Damasco’), Ierusalem, Ormus, Bantam, Aden and Macao. Left and right borders contain 5 depictions each of native inhabitants in indigenous costumes of the regions of Asia.

Condition : In fine condition, full sheet (45,7 x 55,3 cm) with ample margins, on laid paper with watermark: fleur-de-lis with birds, verso blank. Margins slim. Discoloured at top right corner.
