Description :A fine early view of the Phlegraean Fields, otherwise known as the Campi Flegrei in Italy, published by Braun & Hogenberg. A first edition 1581, this probably from a French language edition, 1588.
The Campi Flegrei is a large volcanic area situated to the west of Naples, Italy. There are also effusive gaseous manifestations in the Solfatara crater, the mythological home of the Roman god of fire, Vulcan.
The view depicts the region of the Neapolitan Coastline where deadly sulphurous vapours rise from the ground. The allegorical figures with a donkey's head and a Medusa's head who are striking an anvil with smiths' hammers, and the cartouche texts framed by horseshoes, are clear references to the forge of the god Vulcan.
In the middle we see the artist (Joris Hoefnagel) and the scholar (Abraham Ortelius) surveying the site of luxurious hot springs with aristocratic carriages transporting their patrons and the sulphur mines in the background. Hoefnagel's iconic signature (‘Georgius’) is inscribed on a nail (German nagel) in the foreground.
From: Braun &Hogenberg: 'Civitatis Orbis Terrarum', Liber tertius, Gottfried von Kempen, Cologne, 1588.
Van der Krogt, 4, 41:1
