Description :A beautiful Welsh county map of Merionethshire; part of the renowned “Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine” by English cartographer John Speed. The copper plates were engraved by Jocodus Hondius in 1610 in Amsterdam.
The maps from this Atlas are highly sought after, due to their intricate embellishments. The five cartouches include the framed coat of arms of Wales and King Charles II. The dividers and compass rose are elegant details alongside the winged putti flanking both ends of the frame.
An inset of Harlech Castle is also featured. Merionethshire or Merioneth is one of thirteen historic counties of Wales. There is old English text on the verso.

John Speed (1552-1629) is the most famous English cartographer of any period, as a result of this atlas. The individual maps are the best known and among the most sought-after of all county maps. The maps themselves were derived from the best and most up- to-date sources available.
However, Speed also made innovations of his own - introducing town plans on many of the maps, including county boundaries on almost all maps and also the coats of arms of local Earls and Dukes as well the Royal arms. The overall effect is to produce very decorative, attractive and informative maps.
The text on the reverse describes that county, its industry and agriculture, its physical features and history. Early editions of the "Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britaine" were published by John Sudbury and George Humble.

Condition : In good condition with toning along the centerfold. Also, the top margin is cut short but is adequate for matting.
