Description :A bird's-eye view of Deshima, Nagasaki, copied from a manuscript by Voogt, who was second-in-command on Deshima in 1713. The island is viewed from the landside, depicting the developments of the new warehouses and the garden as well as the famous speelhuis which contained a billiard table and musical instruments on the upper floor and which proved such an attraction to the local daimyos and officials.
Made by Thomas Salmon and published by Albrizzi in 1738 in Venice in "Lo stato presente di tutti i paesi e popoli del mondo naturale, politico e morale...", Volume II.
Dejima (Japanese: 出島, "exit island"), in old Western documents Latinised as Deshima, Decima, Desjima, Dezima, Disma, or Disima, was a Dutch trading post in the harbour of the city of Nagasaki, notable for being the single place of direct trade and exchange between Japan and the outside world during the Edo period.
It was a small fan-shaped artificial island formed by digging a canal through a small peninsula in the bay of Nagasaki in 1634 by local merchants. Dejima was built to constrain foreign traders. Originally built to house Portuguese traders, it was used by the Dutch as a trading post from 1641 until 1853.
