Size : 16.6 x 20.7 inches. / 42.1 x 52.5 cm.
Colouring : Uncoloured.

Description :Very detailed map of Hong Kong and its surroundings.
The map engraved by the master engraver Delahaye, with a quite elaborately pictorial cartouche, engraved by D. Sornique.
Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d' Anville (1697-1782), a French cartographer who compiled over 200 maps. This state of the map is from the very rare Atlas Volume of "Histoire générale de la Chine, ou Annales de cet empire, traduites du Tong-Kien-Kang-Mou, par (...) J.A.M. de Moyriac de Mailla, jésuite françois (...): publiées par l'abbé Grosier (...): revues & publiées par Le Roux des Hautesrayes" and published in 1785.
The text volumes are a reissue of the d'Anville's description of China. The maps are printed from the same copper plates. In upper left corbner "N°19 Description gén. De la Chine pag 73". Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d' Anville (1697-1782), French cartographer. Compiled over 200 maps. This map is from his most important work Nouvel Atlas de la Chine, published in The Hague 1737, The principal cartographic authority on China during the 18th century. (Tooley)
D'Anville used maps prepared by Jesuit missionaries and commissioned by Emporer-Kanyx, who in 1708-16 ordered a surveying of the country. This map is the first accurate cartographic depiction of this area available in the western world.
Originally the map was included in Description de la Chine by P.du Halde, in his new edition a separate atlas volume containing the maps and as here in an unfolded state. ¤

Condition : Very fine condition. Short margins, as issued. A good and dark impression.
