Description :Map of Oxfordshire by Christopher SAXTON and William HOLE. From William Camden's Britannia. Originally published in 1586 with only a general map, the subsequent editions of1607, 1610 and 1637 featured reduced maps engraved by William Kip and William Hole after those by Saxton and Norden.
This map is from the rare second state of 1610.
A very attractive early 17th Century map of Oxfordshire based on the first survey of England and Wales by Christopher Saxton As well as being the earliest map of Oxfordshire at an 'affordable' price, it is also the first detailed one dedicated solely to the county. William Hole, who engraved the map, is one of earliest recorded English engravers.
Three editions of the Kip and Hole maps may be found; the first is identifiable by Latin verso text, the second (1610) lacks text while the third (1637) displays an engraved plate number in the bottom left corner.
Oxfordshire is one of the more sort after of the British County maps
