Description :Early Munster's map of Germaniae or Northern Europe. The map is south-oriented with "west" on the right side and "east" on the left side. Bamberg and Schweinfurt in Franconia are near the center of the map.
In the upper right is Lake Geneva in Switzerland and in the lower right if Holland and Belgium. In the upper left is Stiria in Austria and a bit of Hungary. In the lower left is Königsberg and Danzig. A few fishing boats and a sea monster occupy the North Sea or Mare Germanicus. Two inset panels with information and mileage. Some text on half of backside.
Nicely coloured and fascinating 1588 map of Northern Europe. After many new discoveries and explorations, by 1588 a new edition of the Cosmographia had become necessary. All the maps were redrawn to bring them up to date. Basically, the 1588-maps are the second state of the maps published in the Cosmographia. After 1588, this map was only re-published in the German editions of the Cosmographia of 1592, 1598, 1614, and 1628 and is thus comparatively rare.
The 1550- edition of the Cosmographia is considered to be Münster’s Magnum Opus.

This is a map from Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographiae, the first detailed, scientific, and popular description of the world. Münster originally intended to describe only Germany, but gradually he widened his scope to encompass all of Europe, and even the world. The scientifically most valuable sections are those which deal with Germany and Central Europe. Münster received the assistance of more than one hundred and twenty collaborators, who provided him with the most up-to-date information relating to the towns and places described. In this auction many of the regional maps from Germany and Europe are offered, from both the 1550-edition and the 1588-edition.

Condition : Very good, small imperfections, mostly outside the printed area. Authentic appearance, clear impression, with margins as issued and minor toning. This woodcut map is printed on better quality paper than many other examples of this map.
