Description :Map of the Gulf of Venice also known as the Adriatic Sea by Sanson and published by Covens and Mortier.
The colored areas include southern Italy to the west and Dalmatie (Dalmatia), the coastal region of Croatia, to the east. Serbia and Bosnia are also noted to the east of the Adriatic and numerous Italian territories including the provinces of Capitanate (Foggia), Terre di Bari and Otranto (Puglia), Basilicate (Basilicata) and Prinip Citerieure (Calabria Citeriore). This map includes a large and decorative cartouche with images of fortressed cities from around the Gulf of Venice and a detailed crest. In the top right corner, a large and ornamental scale is illustrated. Excellent, original color.
For much of the 17th century, the Dutch led the world in cartography with their highly decorative maps. Toward the middle of the 17th century the French began to mark their presence in the world of map publishing. It is generally accepted that the great age of French cartography originated with the work of Nicholas Sanson, who is regarded as "the founder of the more precise and scientific French school of cartography and geography.

Condition : Light foxing around the edges and evidence of previous repair to the central crease.
