Map maker : METELLUS, J..
Date : Cologne, 1598.
Size : 7.1 x 9.1 inches. / 18.0 x 23.0 cm.
Colouring : Uncoloured.

Description :Rare sixteenth century map. It shows the east coast of North America from the Outer Banks of present day Carolina to Canada is depicted at a period just before a number of English voyages to explore and settle the coast.
No Long Island or Hudson River are shown.
This was the most accurate map of the east coast until de Laet, 1630, and only the second to use Virginia in the title.
NORVMBEGA, used at first to delineate a large sea and a mythical city, later came to be seen to represent the area of Penobscot River in present day Maine.

There is a possibility that the Metellus pre-dated the Wytfliet map of the same area; there is no question, however, that one was derived from the other. See Burden 118 on the question of precedence.

Published in the German edition of José de Acosta's De Natura Nova Orbis, first published in Salamanca, 1588. Acosta was a Spanish Jesuit missionary, historian and cosmographer. The included maps, however, are attributed to Metellus. In the America sive Novis Orbis of 1600, he is named as the cartographer of the maps but, most probably, did not see their completion as he died in 1597. The work was finished by Matthias Quad.
It has been suggested that the Metellus maps in fact precede the Wytfliet.
Burden, America, 118.
Condition : Paper slightly age-toned. Repair of tear in right-hand margin, not affecting engraved area. In good condition.
