Title : Typus Orbis Terrarum..
Map maker : ORTELIUS, A..
Date : London, John Norton and John Bill, 1606.
Size : 14.2 x 19.3 inches. / 36.0 x 49.0 cm.
Colouring : In attractive colours.
Description :Third plate, first state. This edition has English text on verso. The English text edition of the Ortelius Atlas is very rare, and according to van den Broecke only 300 copies are printed. It is a simplified version of Mercator's influential world map of 1569 updated with the more correct shape of South America and the first depiction of the Solomon Islands off the coast of New Guinea. State 3.1 also has medallions in the four corners, and no clouds.
From the rare English edition of the Theatrum printed in London in 1606, by John Norton and John Bill, following the Vrients edition of 1603 but with additional mapsheets (more than any other edition in fact). According to Skelton the translator was William Bedwell (1561-1632). It seems most likely that in an almost unique transaction for the period the sheets were printed on one side only in Antwerp and despatched to England where Bedwell’s text was added. Koeman notes that the English Ortelius was printed in a very small edition and not sold through the Plantin press, and that even loose sheets are very scarce.
Shirley, World,158, p.181. Broecke, Ortelius maps, 3. Koeman Atlantes Neerlandici III: 113
Condition : English text edition. Wide margins as issued. Strong attractive colours. World map of 1587 issue of 1606, a great example.
