Title : Caerte vande Cabo de Bona Esperança / En haer gelegentheyt daer omtrent..
Map maker : NIEUHOFF, J..
Date : Amsterdam, 1682.
Size : 10.6 x 13.8 inches. / 27.0 x 35.0 cm.
Colouring : Uncolored

Description :Rare first state, 1682, showing the first land grants, with J.N. in the cartouche. An early Dutch map of the Cape of Good Hope map which first appeared in Johan Nieuhoff's travel book Gedenkwaerdige zee- en lantreize of 1682, published by the Van Meurs business.
In the first state Dutch version the initials J.N. (Johan Nieuhoff) appear after the title of the map but they are not present in the English re-edition of Awnsham & Churchill's Collection of Voyages and Travels in 1704. Oriented to the west with an inset view of Table Mountain.

This map is of particular interest for three reasons: it is the best-known early map of the Cape that shows not only the canal between Table Bay and False Bay proposed by Commissionar-General Rijckloff van Goens, but also the route of one of the early exploring expeditions (it is marked 'Rey's wech door ons volck int Land gedaen').
The above mentioned canal was never constructed. In addition it is the first map of the Cape to show the land grants (farms). In the second state, the English version by Churchill, these farms were all erased. ¤
Norwich #209 for second state. Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Atlas van der Hagen, part 4, inv. nr. 1049B13_067
Condition : Fair. Margins trimmed to borders, slight loss of borders occasionally. Brown spot left and right borders.

ID: 99056
