Title : Gemah-, Segoro-Wedie-, & Soembreng Baaijen,. . . ..
Map maker : Dutch Geographical service ?.
Date : Jakarta, 1849.
Size : 39.4 x 22.8 inches. / 100.0 x 58.0 cm.
Colouring : Coloured.

Description :Large detailed blue-back chart of a part of Java, dated 1849, showing the results of local surveys in the period 1835-1849.
No publisher mentioned (probably the Dutch Geographical service), 1849.
mounted on blue paper, the edges lined with linen. This has been done around the date of publication and may be as published.
It shows a section of the Island Java, around Sourabaya. With insets of the Soerabaya bay, showing results of a trigonometrical survey by Lt. Jansen, executed 1843-1847. The other inset shows the Gemah-, Segoro-wedie- en Soembreng Bays, explored by lt. R.G. Escher and Resident J.D. van Herwerden. Other, smaller insets show Pangoel bay (surveyed 1841), Patjitan bay (surveyed 1831) and the Sanka-Poera islands.
The insets often have their own title, and make clear that this map intented to give a topographical overview of the surveys done in the years prior to publication. Thus a very early detailed source on the exploration of Java.

A small line in the left margin indicate that these maps form part of a series: the line reads "Eiland Java no.4". It must have been printed in a small number: the extreme detail indicates a scientific purpose.
Very rare. ¤

Condition : Good condition, some marginal dampstaining, not affecting image. Traces of use, but the map has been well protected by the linen strip around the corners.

ID: 25754
