Description :Text page with copper engraved view of Ramla, taken from Itinerarium Hierosolymitanum et Syriacum, in quo variarum Gentium Mores et Institua insularum, regionum, vrbium situs... Text illustrated with an engraving representing the village of Ramla entitled : Rama.
On verso a small engraving entitled : Domus Boni Latronis with captions A-F. Showing the remains of a 12th century Crusader fortress, Le Toron des Chevaliers lie on top of the hill. Saladin wrecked the fortress on his march to stop Richard the Lion-Heart from advancing into Jerusalem. Since the Middle Ages, this place has been known as "Domus Boni Latronis" (Latin for "resting place of the good thief") the traditional burial place of the "good thief" crucified with Jesus.
Cotovicus (also known as Kootwyck), professor of law at the University of Utrecht, traveled 1598-99 via Corfu, Zante, Crete, Rhodos and Cyprus to the Holy Land and to Syria.
The illustrations is based on those published in Jean Zuallart''s account.
