According to the title Mariette is here presenting Nicolas Sanson's map of the ancient world. The map however includes many 18th century features. Engraved by Jean Somer Pruthenus, the map was issued separately in 1657 before being incorporated in the first formal edition of Sanson's world atlas in 1658. Here with imprint Lutetiae Parisiorum Apud P Mariette, Via D Jacobi, sub signo spei Cum privilegio Regis, ad Vicennium CIC ICC LVII (1657).
This edition with Korea shown as an island.
The map is in two hemispheres with no external decoration: the Eastern Hemisphere is shown with classical nomenclature and the western with a few mythical place names. Note the extensive northern landmass of Jesso and the massive unknown southern continent is still shown, with only the earliest hints of the outlines of Australia..
Showing California as an island.
Reference: Shirley, World 400.
