Built up of two truncated conusses, differing in size, the steps marked by mouldings shaped as flat bands preceded by ogees: base ring similar; breech with ogee-shaped cascable with fillets and a large almost globular button placed on a short neck. Decorated with an Amsterdam hall mark and the monogram of the V.O.C. - Dutch East Indian Company.
Placed on a four-trucked ship's carriage, painted red and shod with blackened iron, reconstructed after a pattern of c.1740, probably for the Admiralty of Amsterdam.
The shogun Iemitsu Tokugawa wrote in 1639 to the daimyo of Hirado: Three years ago the Dutch chief gave me a glittering chandelier, with which I was delighted, and I have now received a splendid and extraordinary cannon that is truly an ornament to our country . The Dutch introduced heavy artillery into Japan. There were cannons on board of the Liefde and an apocryphal story tells that they were used in the decisive battle of Sekigahara. It is more certain that navel guns were used in the siege of Shimabara (1638).
